3. YIGÜIRRO
5:46
This piece came to me in a dream in it's entirety. The song was the soundtrack to that dream. It was about a boy who hypnotized by the stunning beauty of the exotic Bobo Bird, ventures into the jungle alone. The "Pájaro Bobo", with its captivating song, shiny green plumage, and long multicolor tale, would entice children into the rain forest until they would no longer be able to find their way back home. Once the children get lost, their lives, and therefore their youth and beauty, belong to the bird. Enter the Yigüirro, a plain looking brown bird and archenemy of the Bobo; both birds get involved in a mortal fight, as the struggle of good against evil continues. After the bloody fight, the Yigüirro emerges victorious, and is able to guide the child back to safety. I realized later that the dream was based on an old tale I had heard as a child. The song has two instruments carrying the main melody: the piano which represents the "Pájaro Bobo", and the flute which represents the Yigüirro; the flugelhorn plays the roll of the lost child.

4. CHA CHA CHA DE LA MACHACA
4:05
Puntarenas is a small port in the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. As a teenager, I would go there every year with friends to welcome the beginning of summer vacation. We would visit the numerous night clubs lined up along the beach, and dance for hours. As the night would come, sweaty bodies would start to melt with abandon on the dance floor. Couples would share words of love and caresses, sitting on benches facing the ocean. Lustful stares would be exchanged with the local mulatto girls parading their beauty in front of us. The hot Latin beat of the Cha-Cha-Cha would blast until morning. ***The Machaca is a poisonous insect; according to Costa Rican popular tradition, you must make love within 24 hours after been bitten by it, in order to avoid death...

10. COMPASSION
5:09
I've been an admirer of the music of the Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla for years. I was moved to write this piece after listening to the recording of Piazzolla's "Milonga en re", also a violin, piano and bass arrangement, by the great classical violinist Gidon Kremer.
