ABOUT THE MUSIC
The great composers
of the Baroque era performed and composed on keyboard. Much of this
repertoire is too complex for one guitar--
but adapts very well to the medium of two guitars. Works on this recording
originally composed for keyboard include the two Scarlatti sonatas,
the Handel and Zipoli variations (all written for harpsichord), and
the three Bach chorale preludes (written for organ). The two remaining
Bach works, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and Sleepers Awake,
are arrangements of movements from two cantatas, and the Vivaldi is
an arrangement of a concerto for lute and strings.
JAMES EDWARDS and
JOSEPH THOMPSON first met in 1981, and found common ground in
their interest in expanding the repertoire for classical guitar.
Each contributed original arrangements for a concert program of
duets performed in Southern Oregon and Southern California in 1991.
Later that year they created new arrangements of keyboard works
by Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti for a Northwest Bach Ensemble concert.
They completed this recording in the winter of 1991-92. Transcriptions
of the arrangements on this recording are available from Mel Bay
Publications, Inc.
