Away Team members Nik Green and Penny Little/Savage both migrated from signed bands to create a hybrid music, resulting in their recent album "Aliens on Line". Live and recorded, The Away Teamuse loops, sequencers, synthesizers and esoteric sound design processing tools such as the Kyma/Capybara system, to mangle and manipulate sounds. Many of the unusual voices and effects on the album, including the voice of the fish, and various other "computer" voices are actually Penny's voice through Kyma. Away Team performances also tend to feature elements of performance art; Penny is currently designing a new midi instrument to allow her to dance and interact rather than "stand behind a piece of hardware and furniture (keyboards)." The Away Teamwas incarnated in Isla Vista, California in 1994, as a trio with Penny Little/Savage on vocals and keys, Nik Green on keyboards, and with James Fanning on Chapman Stick/Warr Guitarist . This incarnation plus drums and percussion, performed locally in Southern California, and at the Summer Solstice festival in Santa Barbara, in 1997. In 1998, they began to build their own state of the art digital studio, and in 1999 completed their first album together. |
